Real estate pros prepare to face off at annual games in aid of diabetes research

The JDRF Real Estate Games are coming back to New York City on Thursday, June 15 to raise money for JDRF, the leading global organization funding Type One diabetes (T1D) research, through an afternoon competition among top real estate companies at Chelsea Piers.

JIM WHELAN

Jim Whelan, Executive Vice President of the Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY), serves on the JDRF New York City Chapter’s Board of Directors. His teenage son Jack was diagnosed with T1D four years ago. Whelan and others organized the first local fundraising games in 2016, which raised over $80,000 for T1D research. The JDRF Real Estate Games originated in the Washington, DC area 26 years ago.

“Last year’s inaugural JDRF Real Estate Games in New York City was a great success that brought our industry together for a fun day of team building, competition, and networking, while supporting this important cause,” said Whelan. “We are grateful for our community’s support and look forward to having even more real estate firms join us this year as we work to find a cure for my son and the millions of others affected by T1D.”

“The incredible momentum the Real Estate Games has gained from its inaugural games last year is a great credit to the civic-minded fabric of the New York Real Estate professionals.  Truly, this amazing growth could never have been achieved without the leadership of the event’s chair, Jim Whelan.  Both the industry and JDRF are grateful for his efforts and we look forward to the enduring success of this great event,” said Grant Murray, Managing Director at Hines. Grant’s involvement is also personal as he serves as the JDRF New York City Chapter Board President in support his wife, who has been Type One for many years.

“As a member of the real estate community and type 1 diabetic, I am so excited to take part in the 2nd Real Estate Games,” said L&M Development Partners team captain Tell Metzger.  “It is amazing to see my peers rally around a mission so close to my heart in support of JDRF and this great cause.”

Last years games were a big success

“JDRF is extremely grateful for the generous support from the New York real estate community. This is a great opportunity to get family and friends together whether you have Type One diabetes, know someone who does, or want to simply participate in an event that makes a huge impact on so many lives” said Maureen A. Fitzgerald, Executive Director of the JDRF New York City Chapter. “We are grateful for the incredible support of the people of New York City who make it possible for JDRF to direct even more funding toward important T1D research for the 1.25 million people with this serious disease.”

Prior to the event, participating teams will engage their entire company in a fundraising challenge for an opportunity to win additional prizes and accolades.  On June 15, the more than 20 ten-person teams from some of New York City’s top real estate companies will compete in six sporting events including Dodgeball, Hot Shot Basketball, a Relay Race, and a Rock Climbing Relay Race, in addition to Speed Stacks and the Pass, Catch and End Zone Dance competition.  At the close of The Games, teams will make their way to the Sunset Terrace at Chelsea Piers for an after party, presented by Toyota.

Participating teams include AECOM Tishman, Brookfield Properties, The Carlyle Group, Douglaston Development, The Durst Organization, Eastdil Secured, Glenwood Management, Hines, JDS Development Group, JLL, L&M Development Partners, Langan, REBNY, Savills Studley, Silverstein Properties, SL Green Realty Corp., Tishman Speyer, TF Cornerstone, and Two Trees Management Company.

In addition to Toyota, the games’ sponsors include BFC Partners, The Brodsky Organization, Donald Zucker Company, Extell Development Company, Jack Resnick & Sons, Lalezarian Properties, Newmark Grubb Knight Frank, Rockrose Development Corp., Vornado Realty Trust, and World Wide Group.
