Boston Properties CEO to headline NYU REIT Symposium

The NYU School of Professional Studies (NYUSPS) Schack Institute of Real Estate REIT Center will host the 22nd Annual REIT Symposium at The Pierre in New York City on Thursday, April 6, 2017.

The full-day conference, titled “REITs in the New World Order,” will bring together the industry’s most prominent decision makers for a critical examination of the forces that are shaping the REIT sector at this unprecedented time for the American economy and business environment.

Approaching equity market capitalization of $1 trillion, the listed REIT sector in the United States has grown five-fold since the financial crisis, supported by acquisition and consolidation as well as expansion into new property sectors.

Outside the United States, more than 30 countries now have REIT frameworks in place. While the industry’s momentum appears undiminished, it is confronted with cyclical and structural challenges that may disrupt the business model while opening new avenues for growth.

The keynote speaker this year is Owen Thomas, chief executive officer of Boston Properties. The program also features one-on-one conversations with Sam Zell, chairman of Equity Group, and Jonathan D. Gray, global head of real estate at Blackstone, as well as in-depth panel discussions with more than 40 of the industry’s leading CEOs, bankers, lawyers, analysts, and investors. More than 500 industry professionals attend the Symposium each year.

“Following a protracted period of exceptional growth, the REIT sector faces emerging challenges from an uncertain policy and political environment, as well as questions about our location in the real estate cycle,” said Sam Chandan, Larry & Klara Silverstein Chair in Real Estate Development and Investment, and associate dean of the NYUSPS Schack Institute of Real Estate.

“The REIT Symposium is host to an extraordinary array of the industry’s leadership. We expect that our audience will benefit tremendously from their insights at this critical juncture for the sector.”
